Caroline Kennedy Affair: Pinch affair with Arthur Sulzberger? Caroline Kennedy and Ed Schlossberg’s marriage is surrounded by rumors that their union may be rocky. Paterson’s sources leaked out that Caroline Kennedy has tax and nanny issues. Kennedy was also linked to New York Times Arthur Sulzberger.
Caroline Kennedy’s issues. The events prior to Caroline Kennedy’s withdrawal from running for the Senatorship.
Well, stuff is flying all over the place re. Caroline’s pullout:
In sum, sources close to Paterson are saying that she was way out of the running. A tax issue and a nanny issue had surfaced in her vetting.
There was also concern about rumors that her marriage to Ed Schlossberg was in trouble, and that maybe she had something going with NYT publisher Arthur Sulzberger. And, of course, there was also her poor performance after handlers rolled her out as a public figure. (Update: The NYPost, the only paper to report the Sulzberger claim today, has pulled that from the story posted on its website as of 6:40 pm.)
Of course, all Paterson had to do was not pick her. The mess of yesterday — and whether she did or did not withdraw — remains a bit murky. And why Paterson’s circle decided today to slime her is also a little questionable.
By the way, what happened to those boldfaced assurances on Paterson’s questionnaires that he would do his darnedest to keep all the vetting info confidential?
Highly professional and truly classy, Dave. Before we’ve ever gotten around to actually picking a Senator, let’s have a public bloodletting and drench the daughter of JFK in muck. Way to go.
Of course, since Caroline’s not being picked, none of it matters. But it’s now down in the entertaining sty of Troopergate and prostitutes and Charlie O’Byrne and drugs and affairs in which the recent powers of Albany seem most comfortable wallowing.
Peter King, of all people, is sounding sensible. He called it a “circus” on MSNBC today.
He’s lookin’ pretty much right at the moment.
More of his comments after the jump.
KING ON MSNBC
Caroline Kennedy Affair: “This looks more and more like the gang that can’t shoot straight. I was absolutely startled by it. I, obviously, have been planning for the last several months to run against Caroline Kennedy and I wanted to run against her. I never saw a rationale for her candidacy.” “The fact is that it had gone this far. My understanding is that the governor was very close to selecting her and then this last-minute withdrawal literally in the middle of the night, to me, you know, raises a lot of questions.I think we should know why she dropped out and what the governor’s thinking was, I mean, David Paterson is a good friend of mine, but so far, this whole process just makes no sense at all and we’re talking about a very important seat and one of the most important states in the country and we’re going without representation and its just really making it look like a circus. The position deserves more than that.”
